Eddie’s Story: Miracles are Real

The other day, we scheduled some repair work on our garage door. As we all know, when you schedule any type of service the customer representative gives you a window of time for the technician’s arrival. On our day of service, that window of time was coming to a close, and we had not yet seen the technician.

I dialed the customer service department to check on the status of the technician and to discuss rescheduling for another time, as I had things I needed to do outside my home.

And, while I was on hold, the doorbell rang. I opened the door and was greeted by a bright, smiley face.

“Hi, my name is Eddie, I am here to fix your garage door.”

As we went out to the garage, I started to talk about God’s love for everyone. Immediately, Eddie turned around to me with his big smile and said, “I know God’s Love and I know God is REAL. I have seen his miracles in my life and in my family’s lives. REAL miracles.”

He started to tell me about the story of his son, who just turned five years old. When he was newly married, he and his wife were expecting a baby and went to a routine check-up. As the doctor reviewed the sonogram of the baby, he announced to Eddie and his wife that there were major problems with their baby and they should consider aborting the child.

They left the doctor’s office, distraught. When Eddie and his wife arrived home, he said, “Let’s pray. We need to pray to God for his guidance.” During their hour in need and in prayer, Eddie, who was not a believer at that time, made a promise to God. He said, “God, if you are REAL, if you are really REAL, I give you my word. If you save my baby, I will dedicate my life to you and serve you all my remaining days.”

The months went by and at every doctor’s appointment, they would continue to encourage the couple to abort their baby. Eddie encouraged his wife that they could not give up. “We must keep praying and have faith in God’s miracle promises,” he told her.

It was now time to deliver. They went to the hospital together, in prayer, for the health of their child.

He paused for a moment from sharing his story. He said, “Ssusan, see the size of this garage? This was the size of the delivery room for my son. It was filled with doctors and nurses, ready to take him away for emergency surgery. When the time came, and it was truly God’s timing, our son was born to the total astonishment of all the doctors and nurses in the room. He was born healthy. We both wiped away tears of joy from our eyes. We had a healthy baby boy from God, Our God, the greatest miracle worker.”

While he finished up his work on our garage door, he said, “Ssusan, I am sorry I was running a little late. I had the chance to help out my wife, who is at home with our second son, to take our older son to school. And as you can understand now, I could not miss the opportunity to spend a little extra time with him today.”

Over the years, Eddie has kept his promise to God. In order to serve Him, he knew that he must begin by understanding the Word of God. So for the past five years, he has dedicated himself to learning the word and sharing the truth with others everywhere he walks.

I realized that maybe it wasn’t the garage door that needed to be repaired. Maybe this was a reminder that even when things look bleak and a situation seems difficult to fix or to heal from, we mustn’t let the fear set in.

and his every word proves trustworthy and true.
They are steadfast forever and ever,
formed from truth and righteousness.
His forever-love paid a full ransom for his people
so that now we’re free to come before Jehovah
to worship his holy and awesome name!
Where can wisdom be found? It is born in the fear of God.
Everyone who follows his ways
will never lack his living-understanding.
And the adoration of God will abide throughout eternity!
