The Beauty of Letting Things Go
Have you ever had one of those moments during a conversation where something that was said really spoke to your heart? This past week, in two different conversations with friends, something they shared really resonated with me as though it was a message from God about this upcoming Thanksgiving season.
My friend, Vincent, who plays the guitar and is also a vocalist for a band, often shares what he has learned from his recent creative adventures. And, we often share the wonderful emotions of walking through a new piece of music and art. This past week, I bumped into Vincent on my walk. We shared how much we were enjoying the cool autumn weather and how it inspires our creativity. At the close of our conversation, Vincent recited a quote he had read, “The falling leaves of the autumn season let us see the beauty in letting things go.” As I turned to walk back home, I quietly repeated the quote and, when I arrived home, I immediately went to my study and penned it into my journal.
Over the next few days, I whispered the quote to myself as though it was becoming a sweet song on my heart. The more I thought about the quote and said it, I began to realize, yes, this is a wonderful time of year for us to “let go” of things on our heart. It’s time to let go of any disappointments, doubts or uncertainties.
Surrendering the old leaves on one’s tree of life to God with a grateful heart will welcome in the bounty of love and blessings for the Thanksgiving Season and beyond.
Later in the week, I shared Vincent’s quote with a group of friends. We all agreed that Thanksgiving was a time for letting go of any distractions that took us away from the fullness of God’s love and his blessings for us. Then my friend Heather quietly spoke up and said, “I feel that this year is a season of coming home.”
That afternoon, while adding a couple of final touches to a painting of the countryside, I realized why my heart was drawn to paint this memory of where I grew up. It was a gifted moment of time, and as Heather said, of coming home.
Welcome home family members, friends and neighbors to share and celebrate the harvest of God’s everlasting love and blessings. May we all open our hearts to welcome home God’s abundance of everlasting love and blessings this Thanksgiving season.
Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love
and his wonderful deeds for mankind, for he satisfies the thirsty
and fills the hungry with good things.
Psalm 107: 8-9 (NIV)
